Tip of the Month!
Check your spreaders for
any corrosion. Most spreaders are covered by boots and if they
aren't properly ventilated they can retain moisture leading to
corrsion.
Our Commitment
The Staff at Stix-N-Rig'n strives to supply only the best in rigging services
and in our final product. These are the goals of our design team which as
owner I have set and achieved.

It's important to have an annual rigging survey for safety and insurance
purposes. Metal rigging is naturally subject to corrosion and fatigue, which can
be considered normal wear and tear. These deterioration problems are not
generally covered by many insurance companies in the event of a rigging failure.
With a professional rigging inspection performed on a regular basis, or before
any major passage, problem areas have a better chance of being detected and
addressed with proper care and preventive maintenance.

As a case in point, a boat owner called for an estimate on the cost of a new
mast for his Catalina 27 due to a dismasting while sailing. Even though the
accident occurred because a shroud had parted, the insurance adjuster denied the
claim under the plan's corrosion and fatigue clause after learning the rigging
was 12 years old. Had we conducted a rig survey, our experienced riggers may
have been able to point out that corrosion was apparent. We'll visually
inspect your spar and standing and running rigging for fatigue and wear points;
starting at the top of the mast and working our way down to an interior boat
inspection of you chain plates. We scrutinize your mast tune, all shrouds,
forestay, backstay, turnbuckles, lights, spreaders and bases, mast step,
sheaves, winches, shackles, blocks and halyards. We'll look for cracks,
corrosion, possible bulkhead damage, and even calculate your boat's anticipated
rigging loads to ensure all items are properly sized for their intended task.
One uncertainty with a visual inspection, however, is that the degree of
corrosion or metal fatigue cannot always be detected if work will be needed, so
after the inspection we report our findings and make recommendations based not
only on our observations, but also by considering the history of the boat, its
age, frequency of use, and the salinity of the waters in which the boat is most
sailed. For example, the rigging of a boat sailed on fresh water lakes will
probably last twice as long as the rigging of an ocean-going boat.
Rig surveys conducted by the experts at Stix-n-Rig’n are a great value; offering
peace of mind and saving money with wise preventive maintenance. A member of our
experienced team can make recommendations that should help you avoid a rigging
failure. We also help you prioritize whatever work needs to be done to stay
within your schedule and budget.
Off-season is an excellent time to proceed with an inspection so that it doesn't
interfere with your sailing time on the water. We also offer winter discounts,
and our large indoor shop means that work can be done whatever the weather.
